A versatile genius, Sri Sri Swami Swarupananda Paramhansa Dev was born in around the first half of last decade of nineteenth century in Chandpur, the then sub-divisional town of the then District Comilla of undivided Bengal in British India. No exact date of birth was stated by His Divine Grace and no reliable document has been found about it. He came from a very rich, religious, benevolent family. The grand father of Sri Sri Babamoni, Sri Harihar Gangopadhay, Zamindar and who was famous for his profound knowledge. Maharishi Sri Sri Bholananda Giri Moharaj gave Him Honour by title ‘KALIR BASISTHA’.
Srijukto Satish Chandra Gangopadhyay a renowned Advocate, was His father, and Srijukta Mamata Devi was His mother. In Childhood, he was called by name ‘Baltu’ and ‘Bankim’. In the field of education and also in regard to extracurricular activities, he proved himself as an extra-ordinary talented person.
In His youth, He became an orator, a physician, a poet, a singer, a composer, a painter, a carpenter, an agricultural scientist, a mason as well as an engineer, a writer – all of a superlative degree simultaneously. He accepted life-long celibacy and had dedicated Himself in selfless service to mankind.
He wanted political freedom of India but believed that miseries of the countrymen could not be truly removed or remedied until and unless the ideal of character-building is established among human beings. He firstly launched a novel social movement called Character Building Movement in year 1914 which is quite relevant even in these days.
